Embracing Change. accept what's in your control.
Embarking on this new chapter of your life involves embracing change. Change is the only certain thing in your life and now it's clearer than ever before. Your role at work may have evolved, but so have you. Many women see the maternity leave as "career stopper" or "leaving behind". I know that feeling, but take a moment to recognize the growth you've experienced during your maternity leave. Don’t be afraid to reimagine your career goals and aspirations; adaptability is your superpower now. Isn't it? Change could be an immersive opportunity, too.
Time Management and Prioritization. it's your superpower now.
Balancing work and family requires excellent time management skills. Prioritize tasks effectively to optimize your productivity. Consider flexible working arrangements or remote work options if feasible, to ensure you can fulfill both your professional and personal commitments. BUT many times it's just out of our control and we cannot negotiate remote work with the employer. Do not hurry up to leave your job or do not get stuck on seeing "remote work" as the only working opportunity our there. It's worth it checking in what other flexibility exists in your current employer, talk with your manager, ask your peers how they navigate work and life. It won't hurt, if at least, you ask about it. Then create your strategy as emotionally neutral as possible.
Establishing Support Systems. why and how?
Navigating uncertainties is always easier with a strong support system in place. Lean on your partner, family, friends, or even other working parents who can relate to your experiences. Collaborate with your employer to create a supportive work environment that accommodates your needs as a new parent. Many studies suggest that we are happier if we have a strong network group, so it's worth at least considering it.
Reskilling and Upskilling - you are already doing it!
As you re-enter the workforce, consider investing in reskilling and upskilling opportunities to stay competitive in your field. Online courses, workshops, or networking events can help you stay updated with industry trends and enhance your professional skill set. In addition, completing a small course or reading a book, may help you to boost your confidence.
Self-Care and Well-being - you do not need to spend 1h per day
Juggling work and parenting IS hard and you will hear so many recommendations about how your self-care is important. And do not get me wrong, it is important. However there are so many other priorities - at work and at home, so self-care always runs behind. If you do not have time for 1h in the gym, do not worry! You do not need to spend 1-2-3 hours of proper self-care to tick the mark. Read that article if you are in a constant race with the clock.
Setting Realistic Expectations - the key for your fulfilment
It's essential to set realistic expectations for yourself. Understand that it's okay to seek help when needed and that perfection is unattainable. Be kind to yourself, celebrate small victories, and learn from setbacks. Remember, you are doing the best you can, and that is more than enough.
Conclusion
Returning to work after maternity leave is undoubtedly a significant life transition. Embrace the uncertainties with a positive mindset, seek support when needed, and remember that you are not alone in this journey. By navigating with resilience, adaptability, and self-compassion, you can excel both in your career and as a loving parent.
